Florida Humidity and Indoor Air Quality: What Actually Works

Most indoor air complaints in Florida homes are humidity problems wearing a costume. Here's how to tell what you're actually dealing with.

Indoor air quality is a crowded market full of add-ons, and not all of them earn their price. In Florida, the honest starting point is almost always humidity, because humidity is what makes musty smells, sticky rooms, and biological growth possible in the first place.

Start with relative humidity

A comfortable, healthy indoor target is generally in the 45–55% relative humidity range. Above roughly 60%, conditions favor mold, dust mites, and that damp closet smell — and rooms feel clammy even when the thermostat says the temperature is right. An inexpensive hygrometer tells you more about your home's air than most sales brochures will.

Why an oversized AC makes humidity worse

Dehumidification happens while the system runs. An oversized unit hits the temperature setpoint fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull much moisture out of the house. The result is a cold, damp home. This is one of the most common and most misdiagnosed comfort problems in Florida.

Filtration: get the basics right first

  • Use the highest-quality filter your system's blower is actually designed to handle — a filter that's too restrictive hurts airflow and can freeze a coil
  • Change it on a real schedule, not when you remember
  • Seal obvious return leaks; a return pulling attic air is undoing your filtration
  • Media filter cabinets offer more surface area with less airflow penalty than cramming a thick filter into a small slot

Where UV-C fits — and what it doesn't do

A properly installed UV-C light targets the coil and drain pan area, which is the damp part of your system where microbial growth tends to start in a humid climate. That is a legitimate, narrow job. What UV-C does not do is sterilize the air in your living room or replace filtration, humidity control, or cleaning. Effectiveness depends on lamp placement, intensity, and exposure time, so treat any sweeping health claim with skepticism — including from us.

The order that works: fix humidity and airflow, get filtration right, keep the coil and drain clean — then consider additions like UV-C for the specific problem they address.

When a whole-home dehumidifier makes sense

If your humidity stays high even with a correctly sized, well-maintained system — common in tightly built newer homes and in houses that sit empty part of the year — a dedicated dehumidifier tied into the ductwork controls moisture independently of cooling demand. It's a larger investment, and it should be recommended based on measured readings in your home, not a default upsell.
