7 Early Signs Your AC Needs Repair (Before It Quits Completely)

Complete AC failures rarely come out of nowhere. In most of the no-cool calls we run, the system had been signaling for weeks. Here's what to pay attention to, and what each symptom usually points at.

1. The air coming out isn't cold anymore

If the system runs but the supply air feels close to room temperature, that points at refrigerant charge, a failing compressor, or a coil that has iced over from restricted airflow. Running it hard in this condition can turn a repair into a replacement.

2. It runs constantly and never satisfies the thermostat

A system that runs all afternoon and stays two degrees behind is usually fighting a dirty coil, low charge, a duct problem, or a unit that no longer matches the load of the house.

3. Short cycling

Turning on and off every few minutes is hard on a compressor. Common causes include a failing capacitor, an oversized system, a thermostat placed in a bad spot, or a refrigerant issue.

4. New noises

• Buzzing or humming from the outdoor unit — often a contactor or capacitor
• Squealing or grinding — bearing or blower motor wear
• Clicking that repeats without a start — a control or start-component problem
• Hissing or bubbling — possible refrigerant leak

5. Musty or sour smells when it kicks on

That smell usually comes from biological growth in the drain pan, on the coil, or in the blower compartment — extremely common in Florida humidity. It's a cleaning and drainage issue first, an air quality issue second.

6. Water, or a system shutting itself off

Water around the air handler or a system that stops for no obvious reason usually means the condensate drain is blocked and the float switch has cut power to protect your ceiling.

7. A bill that climbed without a lifestyle change

Efficiency loss is gradual. A dirty coil, low charge, or worn blower makes the system work longer for the same result, and the meter notices before you do.

What to expect from a proper diagnosis

A real diagnosis means measured readings, an explanation in plain language, photos of what was found, and options with pricing you approve before any work starts. If a company quotes a full replacement before showing you a measurement, get a second opinion.
